Understanding and Interpreting the Script in Voice-Over Work

Mastering understanding and interpreting the script in voice-over work starts with connecting written words to everyday human conversation. Very few scripts present the voice actor with a phrase or sentence he or she has not heard in real life, often many times. The performer draws directly from that life experience. Just because text sits written on a page does not mean that the thought process for delivering it should be any different from what you experience in actual conversation.

An amazing number of people read aloud without grasping the true meaning behind the words. Many deliver copy in a droning mode that produces little or no emotional effect on the listener. Moreover, many corporate leaders and speakers have the ability to engage an audience when speaking spontaneously, but the minute they begin reading from copy, some emotionally turn to stone by comparison.

Mastering script analysis for voice acting ensures you fully grasp the message before delivering a single word. If working with a difficult, technical, or medical script, focus on understanding the overarching process. If you know, for example, that the solution in beaker A must be poured into beaker B and heated to form a thick solution, knowing the exact chemical names matters less than understanding the physical action. You gain a sense of the real-world process and transmit that clarity to the listener, while specific pronunciations can be confirmed with the producer and written down phonetically.
